Part (L) Compliance

What is Part (L) Compliance?

Any dwelling being built, regardless of when it was approved for Planning, must comply with all parts of the 2011 Building Regulations.

With regard to Part (L) this in particular means that a reasonable proportion of the energy consumption of the building must be derived by renewable technologies.   You must have a technology or combination of technologies such as solar panels, wood burning stove or heat pump etc. to be compliant.

What makes up a Part L Report?

The Part L calculation combines all the insulation U values of the building, size, orientation, heating and ventilation systems into one calculation. Using this data we can determine Part L Compliance and also calculate how much and what type of renewable energy technology is required for the size and type of the planned building. This will require one or a combination of the following: Heat Pumps, Wood Pellet Boilers, Photovoltaic panels, Thermal Solar Panels, Wood Burning Stoves etc to be compliant. Condensing Oil and Gas Boilers in combination with sufficient renewable energy technologies can also comply with Part L.

Every property is different so every Part L calculation is different. There are a large number of inputs that we take into account for the purpose of proving compliance and if any of them is changed a balancing calculation has to take place to offset that change.  There is no single item that will make a house compliant, rather it is the sum of all of the parts.

What A. E. & E. Services does

We have the experience and expertise to advise our clients on how to best achieve compliance with Part L in as cost effective a manner as possible with a technology or mix of technologies that best suits their circumstances and life styles.

We prepare a detailed report to give the client an exact list of requirements needed to build a compliant building. This technical information can be provided to prospective builders/suppliers to show what construction details on u-values of floors, walls, windows, boiler efficiency, ventilation system, glazing requirements and other information that is required for the building to Pass Part L.

All new buildings must be shown to be compliant with Part L as part of the Building Control Act 2014. The best time to calculate the Part L Compliance is during design and planning stage of the new building.
